Winter abroad
There are lots of ways to enjoy cost-effective low-season sunshine. We check out the options.

Winter abroad With summer almost over, it's time to start planning for the winter months ahead. Each year an increasing number of us head abroad, with Spain being the most popular destination. Why? Well, apart from the winter sunshine, the cost of living is cheaper there and campsite fees are low. And, when you consider the cost of heating your home during the winter, it makes sense to spend time abroad, either on an organised rally or by going solo.

The inside story
Jack, his partner Flora, and 'Pip' the dog took 'Fenland Drifter' (a 2003 Transit-based Auto-Sleeper Pollensa) to the Camping and Caravanning Club's (C&CC) holiday rally at Camping La Manga on Spain's Costa Cálida last winter.
In advance of our departure date, Carefree, the club's own travel service, sent us information and documentation, together with maps and information guides (shown, above). We may have been motorcaravanning abroad for half a century but we still learn something new from these guides every time we go.
Although we usually travel under our own steam, on this occasion we found it liberating to have the experts arrange everything for us (and at a discount!). We chose the short crossing/long drive P&O Dover-Calais ferry option as we would be taking our dog with us. When we take the Portsmouth-Bilbao (long crossing/short drive) route we have to leave Pip at home as animals cannot travel on P&O's vessel, 'Pride of Bilbao'.
