| Great trails on the Isle of Wight |
|
Introduction
There is something about the Isle of Wight that is familiar and friendly, like a favourite aunt or an old pair of shoes. Take a ferry aross the Solent and you’ll soon be basking in a glow of nostalgia for an England that has largely disappeared.
The island’s compact dimensions
(23 miles wide by 14 miles long to its tips) make it feel in many ways like a large village – and one that is very welcoming to visitors.
There are several fine Victorian promenades, and modern carbuncles are conspicuous by their absence. With beautiful beaches all around and tranquil countryside in between, it seems purpose-built for pleasure.
Although you’ll find plenty of cream teas, gift shops and traditional crafts, the reason the island has
kept its position in the Top 10 English holiday destinations is that it’s full of interesting and up-to-date attractions that strike a chord with all the family.
