August 04: Multimeter
Modern motorhomes are full of electrical wizardry. If things go wrong, it's time to get out your multimeter. James Stanbury investigates
For a full report on types of solar panels and their relative performance, see our August 2004 issue.

BEST BUY

Draper 61023
Price: £46.98
Contact: 02380 266355
Performance 12/14
Is it worth the money? 6/6
Overall score 18/20 Comments Coming in at less than £50, this is an incredibly comprehensive piece of equipment. It tests temperature, frequency, dwell, RPM, and diodes. An induction pick-up means that the RPM function can be used with all engines, regardless of number of cylinders.

MONEY NO OBJECT

Mac Tools EM710
B £252.50
Contact: 0800 626258
Performance 14/14
Is it worth the money? 2/6
Overall score 16/20
Comments A serious piece of kit suited to diagnostic professionals. This does all the things that our 'Best Buy' can, and more. One of its most useful functions is averaging, which monitors fluctuating readings and provides minimum, maximum, and mean values.

RECOMMENDED

Draper 61022
Price: £33.95
Contact: 02380 266355
Performance 8/14
Is it worth the money? 6/6
Overall score 14/20
Comments Draper's smaller meter is still incredibly competent. Thanks to the inductive pick-up, the RPM function works on all engines regardless of the number of cylinders. Dwell, as before, is possible only on 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, and 8-cylinder motors.

RECOMMENDED

Gunson Automotive Multimeter 105
Price: £42.07
Contact: 01278 436240
Performance 7/14
Is it worth the money? 6/6
Overall score 13/20
Comments This does less than the 'recommended' Draper, but is nicer to use. There is no frequency-measuring function, and the lack of inductive pick-up means that both the RPM and dwell are restricted to 4-, 6-, and 8-cylinder motors.

Draper 50024
Price: £26.95
Contact: 02380 266355
Performance 6/14
Is it worth the money? 6/6
Overall score 12/20
Comments The basic Draper juts misses out on being the 'Best Budget Buy', because £25 is the cut-off point. But, even at this bargain price, it is still a comprehensive unit.

BEST BUDGET BUY

Clarke Diagnostic Digital Engine Analyzer
Price: £22.27
Contact: 01992 565300
Performance 5/14
Is it worth the money? 6/6
Overall score 11/20
Comments As the highest scoring meter under the £25 barrier, this is the obvious 'Best Budget Buy'. In terms of what it can do, it's very similar to Draper's 50024. As well as the usual Volts, Amps, resistance, continuity, and diode checks, it can also show dwell and revs on 3-, 4-, 5-, 6- and 8-cylinder engines.

Laser 3534
Price: £16.95
Contact: 01926 815999
Performance 5/14
Is it worth the money? 6/6
Overall score 11/20
Comments There is a strange mixture of features on this meter. It is probably best suited to general electronics than automotive usage. Apart from the standard Volts, Amps, Ohms, diode check, temperature measurement, and audible continuity test,

Gunson Pocketmeter 2
Price: £17.04
Contact: 01278 436240
Performance 4/14
Is it worth the money? 6/6
Overall score 10/20
Comments Many of the comments levelled at Laser's meter can also be applied here, as well. Granted, there are lots of parts of a motorhome where testing volts, amps, resistance, diodes, and continuity are useful.

Gunson's Pocketmeter 1
Price: £12.93
Contact: 01278 436240
Performance 2/14
Is it worth the money? 6/6
Overall score 8/20
Comments At a smidgen over a tenner, there are two ways of looking at this meter. As an accurate way of testing Volts, Amperage, resistance, diodes, and electrical continuity, it is fantastic value.

BEST BUDGET BUY

Gunson Pocketmeter 3
Price: £70.48
Contact: 01278 436240
Performance 3/14
Is it worth the money? 1/6
Overall score 4/20
Comments At this price, it is hard to imagine just who would actually go out and buy this meter, since it has very few advantages over Gunson's own Pocketmeter 2 or even their excellent meter 105. Granted, the display is somewhat bigger than Pocketmeter 2's. But other than the usual multimeter functions, this has no useful automotive functions. Worse still, the body has no stand, no protective cover, and no crocodile clips. l–
